Some music tracks on Motionstyles are registered with Performance Rights Organizations (P.R.O.s). This guide explains what P.R.O.s are and when you might need to file a cue sheet.
What is a P.R.O.?
Performance Rights Organizations collect royalties on behalf of songwriters and composers when their music is publicly performed. Major P.R.O.s include:
- ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers)
- BMI (Broadcast Music, Inc.)
- SESAC
- PRS (Performing Right Society - UK)
- SOCAN (Canada)
- GEMA (Germany)
These organizations track when music is played on TV, radio, in films, and at public venues, then distribute royalties to the creators.
P.R.O. Status on Motionstyles
Each track displays its P.R.O. registration status:
- P.R.O. Free: The track is not registered with any P.R.O. No cue sheets are required for any use.
- Has P.R.O.: The track is registered with a P.R.O. If you use it in broadcast or film, you may need to file a cue sheet.
When Do You Need a Cue Sheet?
Cue sheets are typically required when music is used in:
- Broadcast television (network, cable, satellite)
- Theatrical films
- Streaming platforms (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, etc.)
- Radio broadcasts
You generally don't need cue sheets for:
- YouTube videos
- Social media content
- Corporate videos
- Podcasts
- Personal projects
How to Fill Out a Cue Sheet
If you're working with a production company or broadcaster, they typically handle cue sheet filing. If you need to file one yourself, include:
- Track title
- Composer/writer name (shown on the track page)
- Publisher (if listed)
- P.R.O. affiliation (ASCAP, BMI, etc.)
- Duration of use (how long the track plays)
- Use type (background, featured, theme, etc.)
The track page on Motionstyles displays the composer name and P.R.O. affiliation when applicable.
Tips for Avoiding Cue Sheets
If you want to avoid cue sheet requirements entirely:
- Filter for P.R.O. Free tracks when browsing
- Check the P.R.O. status on each track page before downloading
- P.R.O. Free tracks can be used in any broadcast or film without additional paperwork
